Description
This house located at 236 Emily Street is still standing today. This image shows the house as it looked in the early 1980s. Structurally, the house looks similar today; however, some updates have been made to the exterior in recent years. This lot is believed to have first been owned by Andrew Forrester, a local farmer who ran a farm on a nearby property. He acquired his land from the Canada Company in 1847; he grew flax and had a mill on the banks of the Thames River. This building could have possibly been an early house for the miller. The ruins of the old mill can still be seen nearby.

The house contains features commonly seen in the mid to late 19th century including the gable roof and the gingerbread details along the roofline. The house has a projecting entryway with a lunette transom window. An addition can be seen here at the back of the house.

In the winter and early spring of 1982-1983, Randall Speller, a colleague of Larry Pfaff from the Art Gallery of Ontario, took a series of black and white photographs of houses of architectural significance in St. Marys. Larry Pfaff and several local friends who shared this interest in architecture took some additional photographs in a subsequent summer. This photograph is one of this series.
