Description

This photo was taken in the early to mid-1980s; it features the home located at 157 Queen Street West. This house was built in 1857 for local Doctor A.E. Ford. The house was designed by architect Graeme Tompkins, who conducted one of the first surveys of St. Marys in 1858, the results of which were published in a map which is now a part of the St. Marys Museum's collection.

Dr. Ford was one of the first physicians in St. Marys. He also held the position of mayor for one term in 1877. According to some accounts, the Fords referred to their home as "Rosebank Cottage". The house resembles a Regency Era cottage in its style, with its French windows and grand front door. After Ford's passing his wife Jane and unmarried daughter Julia remained in the house for several years. In 1949, Jack Crosthwaite bought the house for his family and soon the residence was known locally as the "Crosthwaite House".

This white frame house features expansive gardens and two porches, one at the front and one at the back of the building. The porch posts are decorated with elaborate carved brackets. The house is situated on a hill overlooking the Thames River and the rest of the town. Additions have been added to the home on its East, West and North sides. The house retains many of its original features including the windows, fireplace and stone wall.

In the winter and early spring of 1982-1983, Randall Speller, a colleague of Larry Pfaff from the Art Gallery of Ontario, took a series of black and white photographs of houses of architectural significance in St. Marys. Larry Pfaff and several local friends who shared this interest in architecture took some additional photographs in a subsequent summer. This photograph is one of this series.
