- Description
- This house was built c. 1881 for James Thompson, a local grain merchant. Thompson started his life as a farmer, eventually working in the grain export market. St. Marys was a draw for grain merchants who could ship their purchased grain over rail to cities such as Toronto and Montreal. He bought this lot located at 165 Queen Street West from Dr. A.E. Ford. He likely hired a local architect to design the house. The Italianate style of the building has the markings of architect William Williams; however, there are currently no known records confirming that he was the builder. Thompson lived in the house with his wife Christina (nee Jameson) and son Samuel J. Thompson. The family sold the house in 1888 and moved from St. Marys.
The curved brackets under the eaves, arched brick lintels and decorative quoins are elements commonly used in Italianate architecture. The house originally had an open wooden porch with an upper balustrade balcony. This porch was later enclosed only to be restored once more sometime after this photo was taken. Currently, the façade of the home is very similar to its original appearance.
In the winter and early spring of 1982-1983, Randall Speller, a colleague of Larry Pfaff from the Art Gallery of Ontario, took a series of black and white photographs of houses of architectural significance in St. Marys. Larry Pfaff and several local friends who shared this interest in architecture took some additional photographs in a subsequent summer. This photograph is one of this series.
