Description
A photograph taken in the early to mid-1980s featuring the house located at 78 Robinson Street. This house was built in 1886 for Reverend C.C. McLaurin who was the minister at the Baptist Church. Early St. Marys settler Lauriston Cruttenden's widow Permelia Cruttenden (neé Dodge) and daughter Elizabeth Cruttenden purchased the house after his death. The house would be owned by various members of the Cruttenden family for many years until a niece of the family, Essie Mintie, came to own the house in the 1920s. She had renovation work completed on the home and is believed to have been the person responsible for changing the paint to the darker colour on the exterior as well as having gardens installed on the property. By the 1930s, Essie had sold the house to George Smith, a young dentist.

This two-storey house features a front verandah and balcony. A door in the central dormer leads out to the upper balcony above the verandah. A flat bay window adorns the front of the house. The clapboard exterior was originally light in colour but was painted a dark green in later years. The house appears to have retained several of its original features.

In the winter and early spring of 1982-1983, Randall Speller, a colleague of Larry Pfaff from the Art Gallery of Ontario, took a series of black and white photographs of houses of architectural significance in St. Marys. Larry Pfaff and several local friends who shared this interest in architecture took some additional photographs in a subsequent summer. This photograph is one of this series.
