- Description
- This house, seen here at 22 Salina St. South, was built c. 1886 for lawyer John Clark. The house is believed to have been constructed by Jacob Near and William Cockram. In 1890 the house was sold to John Sanderson who only two days later sold it to Richard Lucas. Lucas lived in the home with his wife Elizabeth and their children. He worked as the caretaker and icemaker for St. Marys's first curling rink and would later become the foreman of the Public Works staff. In 1899 Lucas was in charge of laying the water mains for the first waterworks in St. Marys. In 1925 possession of the house was passed to the daughter of Richard and Elizabeth, Agnes Lewis (neé Lucas). She and her husband Charles Lewis jointly owned the house by 1936. The house remained in the same family for 96 years.
The house retains many of its original elements today including the decorative trim around the windows and the door surround with the transom window above. The shutters seen here have since been removed and ornamental ginger breading has been added to the front of the home. The wrought iron fence seen on the property was added by Richard Lucas to replace an earlier picket fence. He purchased the new fence from the Presbyterian Cemetery.
In the winter and early spring of 1982-1983, Randall Speller, a colleague of Larry Pfaff from the Art Gallery of Ontario, took a series of black and white photographs of houses of architectural significance in St. Marys. Larry Pfaff and several local friends who shared this interest in architecture took some additional photographs in a subsequent summer. This photograph is one of this series. - Notes
