- Description
- This stone cottage was built in 1850 for woolen miller Gilbert McIntosh. McIntosh's mill was once located west of the property but is no longer standing. The course textured stone exterior and the irregularly shaped quoins and lintels above the doors and windows are signs that this was an early construction. The back portion of the house was added c. 1860. Some changes have been made to the house through restoration work including installation of new windows, a refurbished stone exterior, and the restoration of the stone retaining wall. More recently, shutters have been added to the windows and the transom over the door has been removed.
In the winter and early spring of 1982-1983, Randall Speller, a colleague of Larry Pfaff from the Art Gallery of Ontario, took a series of black and white photographs of houses of architectural significance in St. Marys. Larry Pfaff and several local friends who shared this interest in architecture took some additional photographs in a subsequent summer. This photograph is one of this series.
