Description
This photograph shows the stone cottage located at 181 Thomas Street as it looked in the early to mid-1980s. The house was built in 1863 by local stonemason Alexander Grant with the help of his son John Grant. The regularly coursed stone exterior, the finished quoins and lintels and the carpentry of the door surround showcases Grant's skill and attention to detail. It is known from early photographs that the house originally had shutters and a picket fence. Shutters were eventually restored to the home (seen here) but the fence was not.

John Grant lived in the home for many years. Grant, like his father, was known for his work as a stonemason. He worked on the arches of the Victoria Bridge, helped with the stonework on the Oddfellow's Block (the Opera House) and was responsible for the masonry of the First Presbyterian Church. The Fergusson family has owned the home since the 1970s. This house is a designated heritage home.

In the winter and early spring of 1982-1983, Randall Speller, a colleague of Larry Pfaff from the Art Gallery of Ontario, took a series of black and white photographs of houses of architectural significance in St. Marys. Larry Pfaff and several local friends who shared this interest in architecture took some additional photographs in a subsequent summer. This photograph is one of this series.
