- Description
- This is one of St. Marys's oldest houses. It was built in the late 1840s for Dr. James Coleman, an early local medical practitioner. The house was constructed with logs and was later covered with clapboard siding. Coleman lived in the home with his wife Ann and their children Alathea, Mary, Frances, James and Edward. This would later become the home of the Patterson family who would live in the house for almost a century.
The house contains many Regency architectural features commonly seen in houses built in the early to mid 19th century. The one storey house's proportions and tall symmetrical windows were both common in this period. The house originally had a wrap around verandah. The entrance of the house once faced south, seen here, where there is a covered stoop.
In the winter and early spring of 1982-1983, Randall Speller, a colleague of Larry Pfaff from the Art Gallery of Ontario, took a series of black and white photographs of houses of architectural significance in St. Marys. Larry Pfaff and several local friends who shared this interest in architecture took some additional photographs in a subsequent summer. This photograph is one of this series. - Notes
