- Description
- This is a photograph of the swimming quarry in St. Marys on a busy summer day. There are many people relaxing on the grass, swimming in the water and on the high dive. At the front of the image you can see the railing located near the cliff.
Quarrying was a major industry in early St. Marys history, but in 1920 the quarries closed because there was no longer a demand for stone. By 1930, all machinery had been removed from the quarries and they were allowed to fill with water, immediately making the quarry a popular place for swimming. However, it wasn't until 1945 that the Town purchased the property and officially opened the east quarry as a public swimming pool. The Quarry has been a popular place for locals to swim ever since.
