Description

This is a postcard of a group of University of Toronto students playing pushball. Pushball was a popular sport in the early 1900s that involved throwing oneself at a pushball and trying to push it over the other team's goal line. This game would have been between a team of freshmen and a team of sophomores at the University of Toronto. A description on the back says: "Pete ____ is visible here on the left with the sophs. My hair is just seen in front of his face." This description would have been written by one of the men in the Eedy family, but it is not clear which. Based on the time period in which this sport was popular and the style of the men's clothes, it was probably written by John Wilson Eedy, who graduated in 1937.

The Eedy family's history in St. Marys started when John Wolfe Eedy, a University of Toronto alumni, purchased the St. Marys Journal in 1887. His son, Lorne A. Eedy, also went to University of Toronto and succeeded him as publisher and editor of the Journal Argus. John Wilson Eedy, son of Lorne A. Eedy, was the third generation in his family to go to the University of Toronto. He was also the third generation to be the publisher for the St. Marys Journal Argus.
