- Description
- This photo shows Clifton Brown, a St. Marys mayor, on his high-wheeler or Penny Farthing bicycle in a parade. He is putting on a demonstration/performance at a Homecoming parade in St. Marys in 1978. There is a large crowd standing behind this float. This photo was taken at the corner of Queen St. and Wellington St., looking south down Wellington St. On the right side of the photo, a sign for the Province of Ontario Savings Branch can be seen.
The Penny Farthing was purchased by his father, John Brown, who rode it until he was well into his 70's. Clifton Brown also became well known for riding the Penny Farthing. It is now part of the collection at the St. Marys Museum.
