- Description
- Frederika Frances Dale, born on September 6, 1908 in St. Marys, was the second daughter and third child of Professor William Dale and Florence Fredericka Ryckman. Frances Dale attended both West Ward and Central elementary schools in St. Marys. Frances excelled in track and field, tennis, basketball and softball and taught herself to swim in the St. Marys quarries.
Upon graduation from secondary school, Frances attended the University of Toronto where she studied Classics and Physical Education. She later attended the Ontario College of Education, accepting a teaching position at Goderich District Collegiate Institute upon graduation. In 1934 Frances Dale accepted a position at Stratford Collegiate Institute. Frances stayed at Stratford Collegiate Institute for 37 years, retiring in 1971.
An avid traveler, Frances carefully saved her salary from her time as a teacher and was able to take her mother on a trip to Europe in 1934. Frances continued to spend many of her summer holidays studying and teaching gymnastics in Europe.
Frances Dale passed away on October 6, 2001 at Kingsway Lodge in St. Marys. - Notes
