Church_Intro_Panel By 1840 four major Christian denominations had built themselves places of worship in Cobourg. COBOURG'S CHURCH BUILDINGS The Anglicans (1820) and the Methodists/Uniteds (1824) remained in their original locations though not their original buildings. The other two made just one move each into their present buildings: Presbyterians (1862) and Roman Catholics (1896). The four now occupy prominent buildings in the downtown area, joined in 1901 by a Baptist congregation which took over the building originally erected by the Episcopal Methodists. While varying greatly in style, these five are all prominent buildings, clearly churches built in the older tradition. Later arriving denominations often found it somewhat more dicult to establish a strong physical presence (see map). With the population spreading, prices for land downtown increasing, and the need for parking automobiles growing, most eventually moved to the edges of town. Here they typically built more modest and practical buildings. ARCHITECTURE SPEAKS TO US Church architecture has something special to say. Some church buildings say "God is Great". Others say, "You are welcome. Come in." DOES IT MAKE A DIFFERENCE WHAT THE BUILDING SAYS?
