Timeline_Panel_1830 COBOURG ARCHITECTURE TIMELINE 1830-1839 UPPER CANADA ACADEMY The building was originally built by the Methodist Church to provide high school equivalent schooling for boys and girls. Its imposing location at the top of College St. adds to its prominence. 100 University Ave East. 1834-1836 Cobourg is incorporated as a town. 1837 STEAMBOAT HOTEL/ALBION HOTEL This elegant hotel, designed by Frederick Preston Rubidge, was built in the Neo-classical style with handsome door cases, pedimented gables and a verandah with a sweeping bell-curved porch roof. For many years it was the centre of village life. The town council met here and it was also the Cobourg terminal of William Weller's coach line. It was destroyed by fire in 1857. 44 King St. East. c.1830 BELLEVUE/LAKEHURST This grand Georgian brick home was built in 1834 for James Calcutt. To the east of the house he built a thriving complex, known as Hibernia Mills, consisting of a brewery, distillery and flour mill. The house was acquired by John D Armour in 1871 and renamed Lakehurst. In 1901 Armour became a judge of the Superior Court of Canada. 128 Durham St. 1834 MCCARTY BUILDING This temple form neoclassical house retains its window arrangements and fine doorway of note. It was built for John McCarty, who is remembered for founding Baltimore, aiding in the launch of Hull's Corners, and for being a trustee of Victoria College. 334 Division St. 1835
