St_Andrews_Panel_V3 St. Andrews Presbyterian CHURCH In 1859 St. Andrew's joined the United Presbyterian Church, but problems came in 1860 when six members, claiming to be "the Established Church of Scotland in Cobourg", broke away, and sought and obtained legal possession of the building. So a new church, which opened in 1862, was built on King St. In 1925 the congregation voted not to become part of the Union between the Presbyterian and Methodist Churches in Canada. COBOURG'S CHURCHES 1837 & 2012 HERE THEN, HERE TODAY… In 1827 the Rev. Andrew Je�rey came to what is now Cobourg to help form the local Kirk of Scotland. The �rst church opened in 1834 between William and Ontario Sts., south of Seminary St. (now University Ave.) Until then people with Church of Scotland a�liation met in William Weller's carriage workshop at George and Orange Sts. The "Old Kirk of Scotland", opened in 1834 but was vacated in the 1860s due to the successful claim by Church of Scotland members. The Old Kirk eventually fell into disrepair and was demolished. On the �rst Sunday of 1937 �re destroyed the King St. building. The following day the congregation decided to rebuild on the same site and the resulting present-day church was opened in time for Christmas 1937.
