- circular wooden base that tapers slightly to a flat surface; extending from the base vertically is a cylindrical piece of wood; mounted on the cylindrical piece with two nails is a rectangular plastic piece; in centre of plastic piece is a very narrow tube with a silver curved rectangle on the bottom; around the tube is a scal from -10C to 50C
- a glass tube extends through hole near top of cylindrical piece of wood; on one end of tube it curves slightly then immediately widens and forms a glass sphere; this sphere is covered with a lightl brown cotton mesh; pther end of tube curves slightly so that glass extends downwards; as it extends downwards the glass increases in width then tapers to form a sphere; within the wider tube that extends down there is a smaller tube that also extends down to the bottom of the sphere; this smaller tube has a white backing and a scale that goes from -10C to + 50C; sphere is half full with ether
-on a black label on the bottom of the base in white block letters :"S.I.D.A.M./16 RACINE RD./REXDALE, ONTARIO"
- used in science labs at CCI in early 1900s; used for measuring atmospheric humidity
- first school built at corner of Murray and Prince streets in 1855, known as Chatham Grammar School
- 1870s school was turned into a high school
- 1887 school obtained collegiate status
- September 1940 the building on site today was opened
- spring of 2002 school was slated to be closed a campaign to keep it open lasted one year and school finally closed in spring of 2003
