Description
(A) - 3 legged black metal stand has column which extends upward; black metal handle forms 90 degree angle with the column; attached to other side of column opposite the handle is black metal disc; disc had 9 cm perpendicular edge that runs 3/4 the way around and has square cutout ; attached to opposite edge covering square is rectangular piece of metal; 7 slits in metal sit between sides perpendicular to rectangle attached with screws; slits allow light source through; attached to cloumn of stand through disc is silver metal disc
- disc had numbers around edge representing angles; graduated marking in black are under numbers running around the edge
- 3 threaded posts form triangle near centre of disc; spool shaped nuts are attched to end of each post; in black on disk are geometirc shapes (circle, triangle, rectangle with concave sides)
- upside down on the disc is a decorative circle stamped in black; writing in circle reads in part: "[?]/ESTABLISHED/1880/WELCH/SKOKIE, ILLINOIS/[?]"
- under stamp is white Kent County Board of Education label
(B)- metal rectangle; curved end; 4 rectangle cutouts of different sizes; slides between slides attached to rectangle attached to outside edge of (A)
- used in science labs at CCI in early 1900s
- first school built at corner of Murray and Prince streets in 1855, known as Chatham Grammar School
- 1870s school was turned into a high school
- 1887 school obtained collegiate status
- September 1940 the building on site today was opened
- spring of 2002 school was slated to be closed a campaign to keep it open lasted one year and school finally closed in spring of 2003
