Description
(A) - wooden cube box; sides are secured by dove tails; base is nailed to sides; lid (B) slides on top through groove, sits flat to make top of cube; outside of box is finished, inside is not; 2 screws with nuts on end stick through opposite sides of box securing a brass ring inside box, ring spins between 2 screws; connected to ring by 2 metal posts is a compass; spins inside rings
- compass is brass; cylindrical with curved bottom; glass top inside has central spool shaped nut with white disk pivoting around it; disk shows direction markings in black arrows; graduated marking around edge of disk; at north is a shield
- inside front side; upside down reads: "B" in black
(B) - flat; wood; lid; notch cut out on top; 3 routered edges slide into a groove on (A); top finished, underside not (L-12cm, W-11.7cm, H-.9cm)
- used in science labs at CCI in early 1900s
- first school built at corner of Murray and Prince streets in 1855, known as Chatham Grammar School
- 1870s school was turned into a high school
- 1887 school obtained collegiate status
- September 1940 the building on site today was opened
- spring of 2002 school was slated to be closed a campaign to keep it open lasted one year and school finally closed in spring of 2003
