- round wooden base with bevelled edge; attached to top is piece of veritcal wood with scrolled sides; attached to front of this is a piece of curved decorative molding; sitting on edge of molding, screwed to both molding and vertical wood is a metal box; coming out of oval hole on top of box is a bent metal rod with arrow point on end; rod is attached to rectangle and pivots around centre screw that comes out front of metal box; top of vertical wood is curved and shows the number sequence: "2 1 0 1 2" above graduated lines; under this engraving reads: "L.E.KNOTT/APPARATUS COMPANY,/Boston, Mass."
- on base in front of vertical wood are 4 metal posts [terminals] with spool shaped nuts on top; these posts run through to underside of base and are saudered to wires set in channels that then run up through the base to the metal box
- 2 hemisphere feet attached to bottom; also on bottom is black metal rectangle attached with 2 screws; circle cutout; end of screw can be seen, this screw runs to top side and sits to right of vertical piece of wood
- used to detect, measure, and determine the direction of small electric currents by means of mechanical effects produced by a current
- used in science labs at CCI in early 1900s
- first school built at corner of Murray and Prince streets in 1855, known as Chatham Grammar School
- 1870s school was turned into a high school
- 1887 school obtained collegiate status
- September 1940 the building on site today was opened
- spring of 2002 school was slated to be closed a campaign to keep it open lasted one year and school finally closed in spring of 2003
