- Description
- This is an image of what looks to be the Victoria Park pavilion in Berlin. The city of Berlin underwent a name change in 1916, becoming Kitchener. The lake can be seen in front of the pavilion, as well as other little islands. A pathway can be seen on the right-side of this image along the shoreline.
This pavilion was built in 1902 as a picnic shelter and restaurant. It was Victoria Park's first architectural attraction, a European-styled structure, but it only last 14 years. On Friday, March 24th, 1916, the pavilion went up in flames. One third of the structure was destroyed, though the Ontario Fire Marshal publicly reported he was unable to assign responsibility for the fire. The debris was cleared that summer and a new pavilion was built on the same site eight years later.
This photo belongs to the Reesor Collection, which is a group of photos taken by Milton W. Reesor, a local amateur photographer. He took many photos of friends, family, animals, outdoor activities, machinery, the railway, and more in and around St. Marys from 1898-1910. - Inscriptions
