- This stereoscopic view shows the steamship Garden City moving downbound (northbound) into the Second Welland Canal lock at Port Colborne between 1876 and 1880. The photo was taken looking southwest from the temporary trestle across the excavation for the new lock of the Third Welland Canal. Buildings along West St. are in the background.
- Notes
- The Garden City was built at Ogdensburg, NY in 1873. Painted above its name on the bow in this photo are N.T. Co and C.V. Line. The vessel was a package freighter and passenger vessel for the Northern Transportation Company which had an agreement with the Central Vermont Railroad. The Garden City was rebuilt as a steam barge in 1880. A fire burnt it to the waterline in 1897 on the Saginaw River in Michigan.
