Description
This stereoscopic view depicts the entrance to the lock of the Second Welland Canal, and East St. in Port Colborne in the late 1870s. The photo was taken from the west side of the harbour looking northeast. In the foreground, the steam tug, Maggie, is tied up near the entrance to the lock. The pedestrian swing bridge spans the lock entrance, and is connected to East St. by a temporary bridge over the end of the excavation for the lock on the Third Welland Canal. In the background, the three-story building with porches was the American Hotel and McRae’s General Store. On the reverse side of this card, the original owner, DeWitt Carter, tug owner and captain, has written “My Maggie.”
Notes
The condition of the stereoscopic view is poor, as is the original image quality.
