- Description
- A portrait of Clifton Brown (1907-1994). He was born in East Nissouri (now Zorra) township, about 4 miles south of St. Marys and attended Willard School and the "Old Stone School." He was active in track and basketball at St. Marys Collegiate and the Trail Rangers and Tuxis Boys church groups.
He became interested in radio in grade seven. In 1926 or 1927, he had a temporary broadcast license and played music over the local airwaves. He lost that license because he didn't know Morse code, but got his permanent license after studying the code. This made him one of the earliest "ham" (amateur) radio operators in this part of Canada. Brown also served as Mayor of St. Marys throughout the 1970s. - Notes
