- Description
- A photograph of a Canadian Industries Limited (C.I.L) Explosives truck.
The C.I.L was an explosives, chemical products, and munitions products manufacturer in Canada during the 20th century. It was originally formed as Canadian Explosives Limited (C.X.L) in 1910 after six different Canadian explosives companies merged together. During both World War One and World War Two, the company received major government contracts to produce munitions. In 1927, the company changed it's name to Canadian Industries Limited (C.I.L) to demonstrate the diversity of their production.
In 1939, in partnership with the Crown, it established a subsidiary company dedicated exclusively to this sector of activity, Defence Industries Limited (DIL). The Crown owned the factories and equipment, but it delegated the management of operations to CIL. The Crown also provided CIL with the funds to operate the plants, although it did not purchase their production. The company's main focus remained on explosive manufacturing, but from 1988 onward, the company just became a subsidiary of the British chemical company, ICI. - Notes
