- John Caven was born in 1797 in Wigtownshire, Scotland. He and his family immigrated to Canada in 1847,and settled in the Galt area where he taught school for a number of years. He and his wife, Mary Milroy Caven, later moved to the Motherwell area where they lived on Lot 27, East Mitchell Road. He died in March 1880 and is buried in the St. Marys Cemetery.
