At the time of its acquisition by Canadian National Railways, in 1919 the Canadian Northern had 280 locomotives of this wheel arrangement, as well as 10 engines from the Duluth, Winnipeg & Pacific. The oldest of the Canadian Northern was #401 built in 1907, with consecutive road numbers up to #415. These became Canadian National class M-1-a #2010 to #2024.
Following the delivery of these engines from Canadian Locomotive Co. (Kingston), additional orders were made for M-1-b at CLC in 1908 for #451 to #490 while at the same time Canada Foundry in Toronto produced engines in the class M-2-a in 1907 and 1908, #601 to #625.
The locomotive pictured here was of the M-3-a class, built by Montreal Locomotive Works, #416 to #430 in 1907 and engines #431 to #450 were completed between 1908 and 1909. #448 became CNR #2121 and continued in service until 1955, when it was scrapped.
