- Story:
Emma Atkinson’s Marriage to William Doig
July 1, 1908
at her mother’s home, Lot 9, Concession 3
Blanshard Township, Perth County
a little west of Anderson, Ont.
Emma’s father, James Bewell Atkinson, disapproved of William Doig as a prospective son-in-law, it is understood. Will started on as a hired man for farmers in the Anderson district, but he was thrifty.
James Bewell Atkinson died September 24, 1907. His widow, Sarah (White) lived until April 19, 1933.
Emma Clara Atkinson had been born on January 26, 1866, and was in her 43rd year when she married. A son Charles was born and appeared to be healthy, but he died as a baby in 1910. Emma and Will adopted (1) Irene and (2) Gladys, the former as a baby and the latter as a young girl.
The flower girl was Jane Bilyea, later Mrs. Sylvester King, a long-time resident of Toronto. Jane had been born June 5, 1901, and was a little over seven years of age at the time of the wedding. She is seated to the immediate right side of the bride. In 1990, Jane King remains very active and very alert.
Jane’s mother, Theresa (Atkinson) Bilyea did not attend her sister’s wedding on July 1, 1908, as her daughter Frieda was born just two weeks later on July 15, 1908.
Emma Doig lived her married life in the Delisle area of Saskatchewan where Will was a prosperous farmer and a fine husband and father. She died on June 30, 1958, in her 93rd year.
Wm. Doig died on August 2, 1953 at 83 years.
They are buried in Avondale Woodlam Cemetery, Delisle.
