- Description
- This photograph was taken by local photographers Carter & Isaac in the early 20th century. The photo shows a group of five people. A woman and a man are standing near the centre of the photo with a boy to the right and another man; they are all standing behind a woven wire fence. A young boy stands to the left of the group, leaning against a fence post.
Maple and Spruce trees look to have been newly planted along the fence. The shiplap house looks simple yet functional. A sheltered entryway into the root cellar can be seen at the side of the house. A large barn that looks fairly new is at the back of the property. The barn appears to have two levels. The upper level of this style of barn was used to store hay and would have also contained threshing floor. The lower level housed the animals.
The Carter & Isaac company specialized in outdoor photography, focusing on houses and farmsteads in rural Ontario. William Webster Carter was the photographer and traveled by horse and buggy through the countryside with his camera and other equipment. His wife, Bertha Isaac, processed the glass negatives and made prints for sale. Carter & Isaac took photographs in the St. Marys area between 1902 and 1906 and briefly again in 1908.
This image is a contact print made from the original glass plate negative. The contact identifier number can be seen in the bottom corner of the photograph where Carter & Isaac have scratched it into the emulsion. The number is 1071. This photo is part of a collection of photos which appear to have been taken in the northern part of Oxford County. - Notes
- Condition: Very Good - Image is very clear. No signs of damage to glass plate. Oxidation along negative edges (3cm at widest point). Light scratch in bottom left corner (length: 3.5cm). Small spot of emulsion damage in upper right quadrant.
