Description

A brass shako plate of the 104th Regiment of Foot. The plate is shaped like a shield with a crown on top. There is the royal cipher “GR” raised in the center with 104 below. The back also has a raised hook for attachment.

The 104th, (formerly the New Brunswick Fencible Infantry) was raised by General M. Hunter in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia in 1803. They marched on snowshoes in the winter of 1812-1813 from Fredericton N.B. to Quebec (arriving March 15th). The regiment participated in the following battles: Sackett`s Harbour (lost one third of its forces), Fort George, Lundy`s Lane, Cook`s Mills, Conjocta Creek, Cape Vincent and Fort Erie. This regiment was authorized to wear “Niagara” on its colours and was disbanded on May 24th 1817 in Montreal. Commanding Officers included Alexander Halkett (July 1812-May 1813), William Drummond (May 1813-August 1814), Thomas Hunter (August 1814-February 1815).
