- Description
- This is a colour photo of the Saginaw Mill in Thessalon.
The photo shows a group of mill buildings along the water. Behind the mill there is a sloped rock outcrop.
A conveyor ramp can be seen entering the rear building on the left. A horse and buggy can be seen on the right hand side of the photograph. - Notes
- The Saginaw Salt and Lumber Company opened in Thessalon in the summer of 1908.
The original owner of the Saginaw Salt and Lumber Company was Sam Hagen. In order to encourage the building of the mill the Town donated land and a contribution toward the cost of building the mill.
In 1912 the mill was purchased by E.B.Foss who called it the Hope Lumber Company. Mr. Foss operated the mill until 1920 when he sold it to James L. Crane. Mr. Crane closed the mill in 1927 when the company relocated to another town.
Mr. Crane reorganized the mill in Thessalon in 1929, but the mill was almost destroyed a year later by fire. Rebuilding took place and business continued until the mill closed in 1939.
