Can librarians really be faculty? Do our activities, professional cultures, and missions differ enough from faculty to always make for an uncomfortable fit? Does unionization impinge upon professionalism? How can librarians embrace the functions closely associated with us and assert our expertise not as educators or faculty but as professional librarians? This debate will be informed by the qualitative and quantitative results from a survey of librarians from McMaster, Queen's and Guelph, all unionized, and the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Association's survey of academic librarians.
