As OLA's copyright expert, Margaret Wilkinson will provide a status report on the current status of amendments to the Copyright Act. With the fall election, work has slowed, but the concerns of the library community, particularly with respect to access to digital information and technical protection measures, need to be in our on-going conversations with policy-makers. Convenor: Michael Russell, Georgina PL Will's Big Premise: This is a very challenging moment for educators. Our children are headed for a much more networked existence: one that allows for learning to occur 24/7/365, one that renders physical space much less important for learning, one that will challenge the relevance of classrooms as currently envisioned, and one that challenges our roles as teachers and adult learners. The web has brought a world of information to our fingertips and, in the process, has transformed much of the way we work and live. But now that we have the ability to contribute our own ideas and experiences to the sum of human knowledge that we are building online, the impact of the web is even more powerful. This shift in how we use the web is already challenging political, business and media leaders to rethink the ways in which they operate. But what about education? Our model of schooling hasn't changed significantly in over 100 years, and it continues to be resistant to change in any meaningful ways. Yet in this new world of global connections, of powerful personal learning opportunities online, of shifting notions of information and knowledge, we must begin to re-envision the basic foundations of teaching and learning. If we don't, if we sit back and watch the world change without us, we risk our relevance and our ability to prepare our students for the world in which they will live and work. Since early 2007, Will has been a national advisory board member for the George Lucas Education Foundation, writes a quarterly column called "Web 2.0" for District Administration magazine, and works as an adjunct instructor at Seton Hall University in the Executive Ed.D program. He is the author of the highly ranked and read edublog, Weblogg-ed (http:// weblogg-ed.com), and author of the book, Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts, and Other Powerful Web Tools for Classrooms. Formerly a teacher at Hunterdon Central Regional High School in Flemington, New Jersey, Will was recognized for his use of blogs in the classroom as a "trendsetter in education" by the New York Times.
