- OLA's 99th Year and Counting!
We are now beginning the final countdown to the Year 2000 and to the new millennium in 2001. Significantly, the Ontario Library Association is also making plans to mark its 100th Anniversary from October 2000 to October 2001. If there was ever a year to break with some old traditions and look ahead with anticipation, this is the year!
It has been traditional to refer to a conference as somehow being the personal creation of the President in a given year. I'd like to set the record straight for 1999. The stars of this year's conference are your peers across the Association who have devoted thousands of volunteer hours working for you to prepare Super Conference '99. And the two brightest stars fixed high in this firmament are this year's conference co-ordinators, Brent Roe of York University and Anne Murphy of Mississauga Library System. At the beginning of this year, I challenged the planning team to seek your ideas, listen carefully to your input and to feel totally free to reinvent this year's conference. You have only to read the program to see that they've injected exciting format changes- the new CyberLab being organized by OLITA, the new Super Session events on Saturday, Friday night's gala dinner and reception hosted by the University of Toronto, a sensitively varied mix of lengths and formats for workshops, to name but a few. They have created exciting and topical session streams, pulled together a star-studded line-up of speakers and assembled one of the largest vendor exhibits in Canadian library history! I'm proud of the hard work that our many volunteers have invested in making this such an exceptional program. I thank all of the Presidents of 1998 who worked with their brilliant team of organizers and encouraged this new process.
Our new President June Wilson and her team of 1999 Presidents now begin the work of the 99th year of the Ontario Library Association and of the last momentous year of this century. They welcome your participation in this landmark year and look forward to receiving your comments and ideas for Super Conference 2000! Again, welcome and enjoy the wonderful program that your peers have assembled for your revelation, inspiration and enjoyment.
For the 1998 OLA Board of Directors,
Brian Bell, OLA President.
