JOSEPH GOLD Author of Read for Your Life: Literature as a Life Support System 3:45pm-5:00pm MTCC206F NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN WEB PAGE DESIGN: HTML, XHTML, XML Ron Gabor, Software Technician, Library Automated Systems, Hamilton Public Library. New developments in coding languages for the web will be explored. (Please note: this is not a hands-on session.) Convenor: Dianne McLeod, Richmond Hill Public Library. THE DEMOCRACY OF FICTION VERSUS THE FICnON OF DEMOCRACY Dr. Gold will address three points: the role of reading fiction in the formation of personal identity, the global forces now at work to depersonalise and dehumanize individuals and communities; the role of libraries in the coming revolution. The presentation is likely to be controversial. There will be ample time for questions and comments. Gold was a professor of English at the University of Waterloo and a marriage and family therapist. His work explains how readers and clients in therapy can make use of fiction and poetry in constructing, repairing and understanding their own lives. He formed the Association for Bibliotherapy in Canada and is a trustee on the Haileybury Public Library Board. He has been a very successful speaker at OLA programs and was last seen at an OCULA dinner event just prior to his retirement. He has a new book coming out this spring. 62
