EWS SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2001 A View into our Future with Dr. Thomas Homer-Dixon Can we keep up with what we have created? We live in an age that has spawned enormous technical innovation, medical breakthroughs, and the globalization of society. We also face the consequences of our actions; international financial crisis, epidemic disease, and global climate change. Do we have the solutions at hand to keep up with the complex problems stemming from our desire to be better, bigger, and faster? Dr. Thomas HornerDixon is Director of the Peace and Conflict Studies Program at the University of Toronto, and Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Toronto. In his recent book, The Ingenuity Gap, Dr. Horner-Dixon addresses the situation we find ourselves in; existing in a world where we have not yet found the solutions to some of the problems we have created. Besides The Ingenuity Gap, Dr. Homer-Dixon's books include Environment, Scarcity, and Violence (Princeton University Press, 1999) and, coedited with Jessica Blitt, Ecoviolence: Links among Environment, Population, and Security (Rowrnan & Littlefield, 1998). Dr. Horner-Dixon has been invited to speak about his research at numerous academic institutions including among others, Yale, Harvard, Princeton, MIT, Oxford and Cambridge Universities, the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, and the Council on Foreign Relations in New York He has twice briefed the Vice President of the United States, AI Gore, on his research. Don't miss the opportunity to meet the author at the book signing immediately following the plenary.
