The summer slide is the tendency for school-aged children to lose achievement gains they made over the school year during the summer months. It is estimated that over two months of reading skills are lost over the summer (Oxford Learning). Luckily, parents don't have to be afraid of the summer slide. We've prepared a summer reading toolkit that lists various reading engagement opportunities for children in Ontario, and we've also developed a quiz that makes it easier for you to choose the best reading program for kids! We encourage all library and school staff to fight the summer slide by sharing this free resource with parents. The Summer Reading Toolkit for parents was designed by the Ontario Library Association to help parents help their kids through the summer months.
