And Bruhn, who defected with her family from East Germany when she was a year old, is making the most of the arrangement. After winning twd gold medals at the North American championships in October, Bruhn shattered the Ontario bantam girls 400â€"metre record at a recent indoor meet at York University. It must be: Anke Bruhn does it twice a year to train and compete with Athletiques International track club of Oakville. Compared to a daring moonlit escape from her homeland in a homeâ€"made rubber dinghy, the commute from Germany to Oakville is a breeze. (rerman defector now runs for Oakville record at a recent indoor meel at York University. Bruhn, now 14, returned to her homeland with the reunification of Germany in 1990. But she still spends her summers here to work with Athletiques coach Bruce Burtonâ€"the only handsâ€"on coachâ€" ing she receives. Burton has given Bruhn a preâ€" scribed program which she follows under the guidance of a contact he made on a visit to Cologne in 1990. But, he frets, this is not enough to help Bruhn reach her vast potential. "At her calibre, this is not what she needs," says Burton. "We‘ve got to find someone over there who can work with her the other nine months." The East German sports system fell into disarray with the collapse of the Berlin Wall. Where once there were some 250 coaches in East Germany alone, there are now only 20 for an entire country, Burton savs. â€"Bruhn was living with her parâ€" ents in Grimsby when she came to Athletiques as a very raw crossâ€" country runner in January, 1990. She had never won a competition but loved to run. Burton gave her training program that stressed sprinting and exercise, which she embraced with the zeal of rookie. In less than a year, she had shaved a full minute off her 1,500m time to win the North American title in Calgary. This past October, she won the 400 and 800m crowns in Sacramento, Calif. She returned to Germany _ last Tuesday after competing in the York University Allâ€"Comers Meet over the Christmas holidays. She covered the twoâ€" tance in a time of 57.1 s eclipsing the old mark of by Oakville‘s Claudia To 1975. WOULD YOU RATHER BE IN FLORIDA?
