A notation at the bottom of existing letterheads will explain that the association has been serving the developmentally handicapped since 1954. "People will get adjusted to the name," commented Andy Rotsma, the CLO‘s new executiveâ€"director. "I think they will respond as much to it as to the OAMR, although it This brings the agency in line with the Canadian and provincial associations which already adopted the Community Living name as well as the 80% of the associations in the province that have adopted it "in some form," said Sutton. CLO "We threw it open for members to suggest alternative names and put in a deadline," said Gerry Sutton, OAMR ‘s board president. The OAMR has now become Community Living Oakville. But it‘s taken a while. At its annual meeting in June, members of the Oakville Association for the Mentally Retarded defeated the name change by one vote. But the move to switch to Community Living Oakville (CLO) was so close that members thought a special meeting was necâ€" essary. As it turned out, 94% of the 112 votes cast at the November meeting was in favor of the name change to OAMR now Community Living Oakville OUR REG PRICE OUR REG PRICE OUR REG PRICE _ Offers valid only on dates specified. While young parents receive the guidance and information from other sources, they often lack someâ€" one to talk with about their conâ€" cems. That‘s where Auxiliary memâ€" bers can be of service. "We‘d be a support group and we‘d also be willing to go and talk to people in their homes, if they will take a little bit of public rela tions on our part." Janice Ellen Johnston, daughter of Burt and Margaret Johnston of Oakvilie, and Peter Timothy Nikkel, son of Dr. and Mrs. Peter Nikkel of Surrey, B.C., celebrated the first anniversary of their marriage at Appleby Chapel on Dec. 29, 1992. Janice has a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Trinity Western University. Peter also graduated from Trinity Western with his Honours degree in History. Both plan to attend the University of British Columbia to attain their teaching degrees. The couple resides in Richmond, B.C., where Janice is a writer and editor for Campus Crusade for Christ and Peter is founder and president of Pacific Lawn and Garden landscaping. Jonnstonâ€"NiKKEL Weddings It may take the public a little while to think of the Oakville Association for the Mentally Retarded by its new name, Community Living Oakville, but its new executiveâ€"director, Andy Rotsma, is prepared to do a little public relations work to help the process along. New name, new director want, when they are under stress," they said. "For instance, when your children go into a residential setâ€" ting, it can be very traumatic. If there‘s no one to talk to, you can become emotionally trapped." Although the Auxiliary had its first meeting on Sept. 9th, a mere Andy Rotsma began working with the developmentally handicapped in 1974 as a residential counsellor, moved to Oaklands and then to North Halton, where he was executive director for two years. When the job in Oakville was vacated, he thought "it was a good time to make a move." It also cut down on commuting distance from his home in east Burlington. Rotsma‘s future plans call for the purchase of another home to add to Ellis House, the only one CLO owns in Oakville. "We rent seven other places but we want to get out of renting and become owners instead," he said. "The homes we buy will be smaller to house a maximum of four and they‘ll be wheelchairâ€"accessible." He is also looking to assist more able and ambitious clients of the workâ€" shop on Speers Road in settling into jobs in the community. This will be easier than before, thanks to the government‘s move to redirect some of the $5 million cutback in vocational programs into supportive employment, he said. ture. The old name of "mentally retarded" is still used in the United States. The new executiveâ€"director of Community Living Oakville (CLO) has been in the business for 18 years.
