Basically it means replacement of the metal holding a gemstone or diamond in place, namely, the claws or prongs. The reason for the selection of "Retipping" as a topic is twofold: 1. The majority of people do not have their claws checked often enough and it‘s usually after the loss of a diamond or gemstone that it‘s realized that their claws were badly worn down. 2. The replacement costs of diamonds purchased a number of years ago may be considerably higher than what was paid and in many instances there is no insurance coverage. This week‘s polls are: Diagram 1 Nee Jewellery profile with Ralph Srigley 267 Lakeshore E. Oakville 844â€"7220 Diagram 2 A mount or setting for a gemstone can have three, four, or more claws or prongs. When a gemstone is secured into a setting, the prongs are prepared with gemstone setting tools such as burs, files, pushers, and burnishers. The claws are formed, much as a cat‘s claw, to hold onto the stone. These claws grip over the girdle of the stone and, by necessity, will protrude above the stones, as Diagram 1. Most gemstones are harder than the metal used to hold them (notable exceptions are coral, ivory, ebony, pearls and amber) so normal wear and tear will, over time, thin the metal holding the stone. In some cases, wear will also dull the stone, depending on its hardness. Diamonds, being the hardest, are usually not affected. They may break or chip, but cannot be dulled. Sapphires, rubies, emeralds and so on, being somewhat softer, can be dulled by some abrasives and wear. When, after some years of wearing, the claws have worn thin or even worn away, it becomes necessary to either retip or replace them. When new a claw should look as in Diagramâ€" 1. It. is for servicing when the claws appear as in Diagram 2. In most cases the goldsmith uses a soldering flame or torch when adding gold, silver or platinum to worn claws. This does not usually present a problem when dealing with diamonds, sapphires, and rubies because they can withstand the heat. But all other stones and gems must be removed before work can be done, adding to the cost of the repair. This is especially true with emeralds which are extremely vulnerable to damage during removal and resetting. As well quite a few rubies and sapphires are oiled to enhance their colours. With a platinum ring, normal procedures no longer apply. On a gold ring, set with diamonds, for example, the goldsmith can usually solder new tips right onto : the: stone. The : heat required to melt the gold solder does not hurt the stone if it is properly protected. But due to the high melting temperature of platinum solder, all stones in a platinum ring must be removed and reset adding to the repair cost: In closing I would like to remind you that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, so if in doubt, have your ‘claws checked.
