The committee approved a recomâ€" mendation to amend the town‘s taxi bylaw to permit the operation of wheelchair accessible taxiâ€"cabs withâ€" in the town. The committee‘s recomâ€" mendation will have to be approved by council on March 22nd before going ahead. If the bylaw amendment wins council‘s approval, it would effectiveâ€" ly clear the way for proposals by taxi companies wishing to provide a wheelchair accessible taxiâ€"cab serâ€" vice to Oakville‘s seniors and physiâ€" cally challenged. There are currently 45 taxiâ€"cabs licensed for operation by the town. Under the proposal, Halton Taxi, which owns and operates the majority of the taxiâ€"cabs, would transfer two of its plates to wheelchair accessible vehicles. Oakville taxi industry members agree that approving any additional plates at this time would have a negaâ€" tive impact on their industry. The town has also received a proâ€" posal from a Milton taxiâ€"cab compaâ€" ny which wants to operate four wheelchair accessible vehicles in Oakville. That would require the town approval of four additional plates, raising the number of taxiâ€" cabs licensed in Oakville from 45 to 49. But Johnny Walker, a spokesperâ€" son for Canadian Auto Workers Local 1256, which represents Oakville Transit workers, said the taxi company‘s proposal is a move to take over a service currently provided by Careâ€"Aâ€"Van. "(Halton Taxi‘s) decision is based on the volume of business they will Easter is just around the corner and the Fareshare Foodbank needs help in restocking its dwindling supplies. The Fareshare Foodbank‘s annual Easter Food Drive takes place April 7th to 12th. "We really need this food drive at Easter to keep us going throughout the year," said Laura Watson, a Director at the Foodbank. As well, the food bank is in need of volunteers to help sort the donations it receives. Last year, approximately 60,000 pounds of food was donated to help Oakville‘s needy. "That‘s when we really need the added help," said Watson. Presently, there are 30 regular volunteers as well as those who help out when they can, but this is not enough to dedl with the rush of donations they receive at Easter, says Watson. Donations can be dropped off at any local fire station, supermarket food drop or at the Fareshare Foodbank at 1240 Speers Road, Unit 6.
