Happy pruning! Mark Cullen is President of Weall and Cullen Nurseries. Listen to him on THE GARâ€" DEN SHOW CFRB 1010 Saturdays 10 to noon. You can prune the suckers and weak wood off fruit trees, but save the major pruning until after fruiting, or in the fall. And one last tip ... sterilize your pruning tools in chloâ€" rine bleach before you start cutting. If you‘re pruning out a disease, sterilize before each cut. And don‘t forget your Now‘s the time to prune summerâ€"flowâ€" ering shrubs like butâ€" terfly bush, roses (not climbers), clematis and hydrangea. Trees that bleed like maple, birch and walnut should NOT be pruned now. Wait till they‘re in full leaf in midâ€"summer when the sap runs slowest. Shrubs should be pruned by thinning not shearing. And always prune to an outward facing bud. Spreading evergreens should be thinned too, to allow more light to enter the plant so they don‘t brown out underâ€" neath. Save the sharâ€" ing _ for yews, junipers and cedars that you want to shape into globes, pyramids and hedges. Don‘t prune out or shear off the central leader of an upright tree that you want to retain in its natural shape. Next, if you have any old shrubs that have become huge and unruly and haven‘t been producâ€" ing much in the way of new leaves and blossoms, you can rejuvenate them over several years by cutâ€" ting one or two main branches down to ground level each spring. Except for an attempt to rejuvenate old shrubs though, generally speaking, springâ€"flowering plants should not be pruned until after flowering. With lilac for instance, you should remove the dead flower heads as soon after flowering as possible. Lilac and many other springâ€" flowering shrubs begin to set next year‘s flower buds soon after this year‘s blossoms have faded. (From RE 18) aged branches from evergreens, hedges, trees and shrubs. Cuts larger than an inch in diameter should be sealed over with pruning paste or paint. Ready prune!
