The Sault and Peterborough, firstâ€"place finishers in the Emms and Leyden divisions, respectively, engaged in a bestâ€"ofâ€"seven Ontario Hockey League Super Series to determine who would host this year‘s national junior hockey championship in May. And it was Toms‘ goal that capped a surprising 4â€"0 sweep in front of the hometown fans. Clearly, this was Toms‘ biggest goal in his two campaigns with the Greyhounds. The Petes entered the series the No. 1 ranked team in Canada (the Sault checked in at No. 6). "I can‘t describe the feeling," said Toms, who potted 16 goals (including three gameâ€"winners) and 23 assists in Memorial Cup By TOM MICHIBATA Oakville Beaver staff Toms has golden touch for Greyhounds There‘s usually not much in the line of an international element. Boston‘s Sam Williams once again will be the only foreigner (once a team from Scotland entered). Mostly they come from Southerm Ontario. The host club will have four men‘s entries, including defending champion Ken Sawchenko (Lew Falconer, Brian Sheridan and Kurt Tomowski are the others). Lessia Parks skips the only local rink on the women‘s side. And, unaccustomed perhaps to the wily ways of curlers and their time honored traditions, she may offer her right hand as a means of introduction. Don‘t. If you‘re caught,. you‘ll have to buy a round of drinks. For the house. Ah, those wacky lefthanders. Even the program for the event is for lefues (its reads from back to front). Lefthanded people make up only a little more than 10 per cent of the population. They are considered to be genâ€" erally more artistic than righthanders and often become wealthy baseball players. But apparently lefthanded curlers are quite rare, which is why the club started this bonspiel for lefties. It‘s called the world championships only because it‘s believed to be the world‘s only tournament for portâ€"siders. Despite all the hijinks, "It‘s pretty serious curling," says Vern Kingdon, of the tournament communications comâ€" mittee, with plenty of prizes and sponsors. But Kingdon sheepishly admits he‘s a righthander. He‘ll undoubtedly be wary when it comes to handshakes. The Mayor is scheduled to officially open the 20th annual World Lefthanders Curling Championships, beginâ€" ning tomorrow (Thursday) at Oakville Curling Club. Naturally, there will be handshakes all around as the 64 teams get ready four days of curling action and comaâ€" raderie. ; A word of caution to Mayor Ann Mulvale; Use your left hand. The 18â€"yearâ€" old Oakville native and secondâ€"year winger for the Sault Ste. Mackellar, drafted from Oakville midgets a year ago, spent most of the season playing Tier II in Elliot Lake. "Our defenceman, Drew Bannister, kept the puck in at the blueline. He took a slapshot and I deflected it into the top corner." "I wouldn‘t say we were confident," said the 6â€" footâ€"5, 203â€"pounder, who was picked in the ninth round of last year‘s NHL draft by New Jersey Devils. "We just thought we‘d do our best and see what happens. Obviously it turned out for the betâ€" ter. "It was hard work and discipline. We have a lot of maturity on the team. The Petes are a young team. Maybe the pressure got to them." Playing on a line with centre Ralph Intranuovo and Rick Kowalsky, Toms®‘ uses his size and strength to work the corners and get the puck out to his linemates. He also takes pride in the line‘s defensive work. "My skating has really improved," the former White Oaks Secondary School student said. "I took powerskating at Cindy Bower‘s school (in Oakville) last summer. I‘ve gotten more confidence and more playing time." Toms said that although beating the Petes was an upset, the club was playing its best hockey of the season entering the series. Toms says bringing the Memorial Cup to Sault Ste. Marie is not only good for the franchise but beneficial to the city itself. "Hopefully it will make people realize it‘s a great city...I‘m really happy up here. I‘ll hate to leave when the time comes." Notching only 14 points in limited time in his rookie year, Toms was asked to step up his role this year and he‘s accepted the challenge. 59 regularâ€"season games this year. "It was incrediâ€" ble. Burloak Canoe Club just wants you to know that their home is your home. They‘re thinking that people are going to look at their fancy new $450,000 digs and shake their heads and mumble about wasteful government spending. Okay, so the provincial government, through Wintario, did chip in with $100,000. And, why yes, the Town of Oakville did back up a $70,000 mortâ€" gage on the place and it did agree to lease the land for the princely sum of $1 a year. That much is agreed upon. But the rest of the money? It came from the club‘s bank account. The planning? All done by the club, through architect Neil McDonald. Then there‘s the building itself: It has a pair of publicâ€"access washrooms, plus a general purpose meeting room, also available to the public. And when the new complex opens next month on the Navy Flats, along Sixteen Mile Creek and across from an old condemned sewage treatment plant, it will not be for a couple of uppity athletes who nab a medal or two at the Olympics then disappear. That‘s not how the club works. "We‘re trying to adjust our balance to serve both needs," says the club‘s commodore, Peter Forand. But what Forand and head coachâ€"â€"and former Olympianâ€"â€"Scott Oldershaw stress is that, despite appearance to the contrary, canoeing isn‘t merely for the bigâ€"biceped crowd. This is why the club has instituted what it calls "special memberships" for people more interested in the recreational benefits, and a program called "Canoe Kids," which consists of three, twoâ€"week sessions stressing water safety and other basics to youngsters. There‘s not even racing for anyone under 14. After all, the only time people really see canoeing is every four years in farâ€"off lands such like Seoul or Barcelona.
