> @ Taiwan police look to Halton for advice By ROSS POLLOCK Oakville Beaver Staff J hat can a police force [‘ of 6,500 members learn / Â¥ from the Halton Reglonal Police? Lots, according to three highâ€" ranking visiting oftficers from the Taipei County Police Bureau in Taiwan. During a recent visit the three went on rideâ€"alongs, took part in information sharing sessions and observed the workings of Halton police administration. While the Halton force has only about 500 members, officials from the 6,500 strong Taipei force say the trip has been beneficial. "We hope to gain some experiâ€" ence from the Halton Regional Police Service that can help develop and improve the Taipei Police and Administration serâ€" vices," said Taipei County Police Commissioner Anâ€"Pang Wang, speaking through an interpreter. Their stop in Halton was part of a 14â€"day trip to North America. The object of their visit is to learn more about the different styles of management within police adminâ€" istrations throughout North America. Deputy Chief of Police John Barratt, first met commissioner Wang and Taipei police chief, Colonel Shihâ€"Chih Wu, at the International Chiefs of Police Conference in Minneapolis in October, 1991, where he extended the invitation to visit Halton. Presently, the officers from Taiwan are visiting police forces across North America. The surrounding facilities and forensic equipment of Halton is excellent, said Colonel Wu. As well, he complimented Halton police on the dedication of their officers. The duties of the Taipei County police are very different, compared to those of North American officers, said Colonel Wu. Besides the standard police services, officers from Taipei County are fire fighters and immiâ€" gration officers. Taipei County, which is just outside the city of Taipei, has a population of 3.5 million and a police force of 6, 500. The largest problem they face at the present time, says Colonel Wu, is public disorder. Taiwan is no longer under martial law and people have the right to demonstrate. This is the major concern of the police at the present time. In comparing the Halton FREE BODY COMPOSITE WITH CONSULTATION APRIL 10TH 1993 SAT. 11 A.M. TO 12:30 BM.
