One of the highlights of the day was being in the square where all the steel drum bands come together to practice for Carnival. There were so many and they were all practising their own parts, so it was just a huge commotion of sounds. Then they all came together and played some pieces especially for us. It sounded wonderful â€"â€" so alive. In Trinidad we picked up the new second semester students, 17 in all. After we helped them settle in, orientation and training began. While half of the old students were writing their exams, the rest of us were teaching the new students. I didn‘t realize how much I now know about sailing and tall ships until I started teaching the new students. It made me feel like a real expert. We taught them the names of the different lines and sails, and then how they all work. We taught them how to raise, douse and furl the sails, how to brace the yards, and of course how to climb the shrouds. By now we, the old students, are experienced and comfortable with climbing. We scramble up, down and all over with ease. As we helped the new students out onto the yard for the first time, it reminded us of Montreal last summer when we first learned how to climb. In addition, we taught them the various knots they will need to know, including bowline, sheet bend, square knot, double half hitch, clove hitch, anchor bend and stopper knot. They also had to the vernacular of the Seaman. Finally we had much pleasure in introducing them to various tasks, such as cleaning scuppers, galley duty and mariner‘s watches throughout the night. l k, f Until next wee / \fi‘,, 3 L C/%w(_ The following day a speaker visited the Concordia and told us all about the history and culture of Trinidad. That aftermoon we visited the workshops where the costumes for Camnival were being made. They were beautiful, colourful and extravagant. The theme for this year‘s Carnival is the instruments of the band, each costume portraying a different instrument. Dear Oakville: On our first day in Trinidad, we attended a reception at the Canadian High Commissioner‘s house, where we met with local students. This is always one of the most enjoyable things we do on Class Afloat. The students we meet always have many questions about Canada, and it is interesting to discuss the similarities and differences between our respective lives. The next day we toured part of the island which is very lush and green. Then we spent the aftemoon on the beach where we sampled the local cuisine. "Shark and Bake" is popular with the locals.
