Our next stop was at a gaucho ranch. Gauchos are the Uruguayan cowboys who have played an important role in the history of their country. Fiercely nationalist, they helped to fight for Uruguay‘s independence. After the ranch we visited a gaucho museum. At the tomb of a national hero from the war of independence, there were two guards guarding his ashes. After the day in Montevideo, we did ‘doing the rounds‘ of post office, telephone office and McDonalds, and then set sail for Argentina at Montevideo, Uruguay is a very beautiful city with monuments in every square. During our walking tour of the city, we visited the leather factories where a vast range of leather items are produced and sold, including beautiful garments. We also visited the Parliament Buildings which were architecturally breathtaking. The main hall, called the Hall of Lost Stairs, was covered in every colour of marble imaginable. Everything was marble. These buildings were built during Uruguay‘s prosperous period in the first half of the 20th century. We visited the zoo in Montevideo, the highlight of which for me was a tarantula spider in its natural habitat.
