Furthermore, doctors Will be less inclined to offer free after-hours telephone advice to patients, as they do now. These patients would probably rush to emergency wards of hospitals, thus upping costs. ' "On an average weekend, I give tr advice to about 20 patients over the phone and, if absolutely neces- sary, refer them to either a walk-in clinic or hospital emergency," said Dr. Lynn Nash. "It's cost-effective because it's less expensive to call the doctor than to go to emergency." , Moreover, Nash took umbragy with the media which insists on pub The doctors contended the gov- ernment has a very short-sighted view and that its proposals will only 'drive up medical costs, not decrease them. They listed the rationale for this statement by first noting that overworked doctors who remain in the system will resort to more labora- tory tests as a "quick substitute" for taking time with patients to sort out Family physicians in Ontario turned down Bob Rae's social coll- tract with a polite but firm "No, thank you.?' , Some members of the Ontario College of Family Physicians met the press last week at Oakville's Holiday llnn to list their reasons for rejecting, the expenditure control plan pro- posed by Rae and his provincial gov- ernment. Oak 'sphere na ttr le A Justice of the Peace ruled Friday the Town of Oakville infringed on the rights of an Oakville Sikh cou- ple who were charged and convicted of violating a town bylaw in 1991. Charges against Raghbir Singh Dhaliwal, and his wife Avtar Dhaliwal, of 1103 Oakery Woods Place, were "stayed" and the couple were awarded $100 in damages to be paid by the town. Back in 1991, the Dhaliwals were charged with hav- ing two pillars encroaching on town property. The pillars act as pedestals for lion statues. The Dhaliwals appealed the decision and were granted a new trial in February. At the second trial the Sikh cou- ple argued in Oakville's Provincial Offences Court the charges were discriminatory and violated the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. At the end of the second trial, Justice of the Peace Carole Starr reserved judgement which was handed down Friday. In her ruling Starr said the testimony of defence wit- nesses was "credible." The witnesses testified three neighbors who complained about the Dhaliwal's encroachment had made statements "to the Dhaliwals which contained racial slum," Starr said.
