For years I‘ve passed the familiar brick facade of The Country Squire Restaurant, readily visible from the highway, and each time I‘ve thought, "That looks like a nice restaurant." But | wasn‘t prepared for the delightful spot I found when | went inside. Warm oak, stained glass, softly carpeted floors and pretty bay windows lend an air of comfort and stability. Each of the three main dining areas, The Squires Room, The Camelot Room and The John Bull Room, offers a similar menu but the emphasis changes. The John Bull Room offers fast service for business people on the hop (as well as some excellent Canadian draft). The Camel .+ Room offers a light menu i d in the Squires Room, one dines in casual elegance. Each boasts a fireplace, most woodâ€"burning, and of all things, a grandfather clock. The handsome timepieces standing foursquare in each dining room are a reminder of days gone by, when a restaurant‘s reputation was built on service as well as good food. Indeed, in a business known for large staff turnover, a restaurant that manages to keep staff for eight, ten and even thirty years, must be a good place to work. And the friendliness that such camaraderie engenders spills over to the customers. Most folks agree that The Country Squire has a warmth and cheerful ambiance that‘s hard to find these days. Regulars can expect the staff to stop and chat and even a stranger gets an encouraging smile. But it‘s more than just smiles that brings them back, day after day. Because they do come back. Business men gather in quiet corners to transact a little commerce over breakfast or lunch, families enjoy an opportunity to dine in comfort away from the hurly burly of daily life, couples take a moment to just be together in pleasurable surroundings and seniors relax over excellent food offered with a thought to their pocket books. It isn‘t only seniors who have to think of the budget these days. I don‘t know about your family but ours would love to dine out more often. And now that we‘ve discovered The Courtry Squire, we can. Where else can you find a restaurant that actually dropped their prices by 20%? Dominic Caputi told me, “We know times are tough and we want to make our food affordable for everyone. We want people to bring the whole family and not break the bank to do it." He and coâ€"manager, Stephen Stefanyk, have made a commitment to maintain the highest standards at the most reasonable prices they can offer. Even the oldâ€"fashioned club sandwich is served with 5 ounces of real, handâ€"carved chicken breast. And the chicken pot pie is brimming with great chunks of meat. When I ordered the catch of the day I found not one, but two, beautifully filleted red trout, cooked to perfection (what a treat to find fish moist and juicy, not dry and overdone as often happens). This attention to careful preparation and attractive presentation makes each dining experience a positive joy. On Sunday, dozens of Oakville residents take advantage of the terrific buffet brunch at The Country Squire. Everything from the standard breakfast fare (bacon, sausages, eggs, pancakes) to a butterâ€"tender prime rib of beef, pasta, Swedish meatballs and even barbequed chicken can be found here. And to complement all that, there‘s plenty of cold salads. Top it off with a dessert of their famous rice pudding, cakes, mousses or even fresh fruit and you have an amazing value for $12.95 (kids eat for only $6.95). For business meetings or special events, there‘s meeting rooms, a board room, banguet rooms and all catered by the same superb kitchen staff who prepare meals for the restaurant. So you know you‘ll get the same attention Te to detail you‘ll find in every dining room at The Country Squire. And speaking of music, Jim Paris entertains in the Squires Room every Friday and Saturday night from 6â€"11 p.m., offering a mix of contemporary easy listening music sung in his own inimitable style. There‘s something for everyone at The Country Squire. For families there‘s affordable dining with an extensive menu. For business folk, fast, efficient meals and discreet staff. There‘s even something for me. I‘m a tea drinker, and | was delighted to find that in the Squires Room, my tea came in a pretty ceramic pot.
