Sunday between 2 and 5 p.m. There, as you sit sipping and admiring the lake, you will be entertained by young members of the New School of Classical Vocal Studies with a miniâ€"opera of Don Giovanni. (This is where the World Record part comes in because this opera is usually reserved for more mature voices) All funds raised from the Strawberry Concert Tea will go towards the school‘s full presentaâ€" tion of the Mozart opera to be held Thursday, June 24th and Saturday, June 26th at the Betty Oliphant Theatre on Jarvis Street in Toronto. The school may be located in the big city but several of its scholâ€" arship students are from Oakville including Timothy Isherwood and Federico Gonzalez. Opened in 1985 by longtime operettic and musical comedy singer Daniel Eby, the New School of Classical Vocal Studies has a limit of 15 scholarâ€" ship students and 35 other private lesson students. "The kids in the Don Giovanni opera are products of that (scholarâ€" ship) program," says Eby, originalâ€" ly from Philadelphia. "It‘s probably the youngest cast ever...seven voicâ€" es fit the demands of the opera. They‘re so young, it‘s quite amazâ€" ing." The cast has been in rehearsal since December, a "pretty intense" period of time which has proâ€" gressed to five rehearsals a week, says Gonzalez, a 21â€"yearâ€"old forâ€" mer St. Michael‘s Choir School student. (See ‘Giovanni ‘ page 27) A beautiful setting and possibly the youngest cast ever singing Don Giovanni will greet you Sunday at a special fundâ€"raising strawberry tea. You may even run into this Edwardian family which includes Dave Nichols and Claudette Shaw and little ones Karla McLean and Lawren Shaw.
