Dear Oakville: When we arrived in Valparaiso, we learned that they had been having the worst stomrs there in a very long time. There were shipwrecks all around the harbour and there was no berthing place for us. Because the harbour was unusually deep we couldn't anchor safely, and so that night we were forced to leave port until more favourable weather conditions returned. After a day at sea, we retumed to port On the first day we had shore leave and everyone went shopping in the local markets, buying woollen sweaters and ponchos. "lhe following day we took a bus into Santiago, the capital of Chile, about one hour's drive from the port of Valparaiso. We went through some beautiful countryside and saw many vineyards. In Santiago we visited the Grange School, where we toured the campus, and then participated in some friendly games of volleyball, basketball and soccer. At sea on the Concordia, volleyball, basketball and soccer are rather ditficult to practice! Our men's teams were beaten sorely, so we decided that mixed teams would even things up a little. After dinner we returned to the Concordia in Valparaiso where we were eventually able to dock for provisioning before heading out into the South Pacific. Provisioning is always such a nightmare. We were up until 4:00 am., stacking bread, vegetables and eggs, into the Concordia's cool room. The following day, we visited the home of a famous Chilean poet. It had a nautical theme and an unusual design. It was tall and narrow, built one room on top of another, and was five storeys high. After a final day's shore leave we set sail into the South Pacific for Robinson Crusoe Island. . \ Untrl next week, ’flwddeefl7lmét 7754466}? He hopes PWC operators will respect police when on a PWC them- selves in order to eliminate potential ani- mosity. Martin is currently in a continuing court case involving a PWC accident last July 16th off Burlington’s Spencer Smith Park. A l6â€"yearâ€"old Burlington girl was in a PWC crash which left her in hospital for four months. She lost her spleen, a kidney and suffered numerous A Proud Sponsor supporting Sarah on her voyage Rom. Dalton said almost anyone can rent a PWC - about $50/hr. - by airanging to meet someone at a local beach who’s willing to rent their own craft. It’s not organized, he said. V It happens more in Burlington, than Oakville, and police can’t do much to regulate it. They’ll get to know regular PWC operators and take an educational approach with patrols until later in July before getting tough with enforcement. “Our first priority is to educate users as to the proper requirements under the Canada Shipping Act. We’ll be follow- ing up with strict enforcement,” said Dalton. Few laws govern PWCs, but some mles make them similar to other marine vessels - like the nwd for registration with Canada Customs and use of a hull number, life jacket, and sounding device like an air horn. "The biggest problem seems to be the inexperience factor, there seems to be no fear. People on the water don’t have respect for the wds these things can get up to,” said Dalton. PWC operators must watch for other vessels. The PWC's maneuverability is another problem and operators can either forget or not know that to stop a PWC, you don’t just brake or let off the throttle, the craft must be turned side- ways, much like a skating stop. Because they occur on the water, ofiences axe under federal laws. Convictions carry a cfiminal record and fines of $150 to $200. Another major rule PWC operators must follow is a newly introduced law limiting all power vessels to 10 lcm/hr within 30 metres of shore. No smd limits are set in open water. PWCs aren’t a favorite with other boaters, said Dalton because of their size. "They can be right beside you and you won’t even notice,” he said. Shoreline residents often complain about noise too. Information and courses on PWC operating are available through the Coast Guard and the Power Boating Association of Canada The Canadian PWC Training Centre trains instructors out of Tillsonburg and PWC operators can contact a local instructor for a day’s lesson, said Dalton. Most PWC dealers have numbers to call for arrangements, he said. A pricing error has occurred on page 8 of this week's 'Ca‘nada Sale' ilyer. The Atter Rebate Price for the Genesis 'X- Men' game cartridge should have read $59.95, not $54.95.
