Halton police name new coordinator for Crimestoppers There is a lull in Crime Stopper calls from the public. But newlyâ€"appointed police coordinator for Crime Stoppers Sergeant Rod Cliffe is not worried about the lack of action. But there were only six calls to Halton‘s Crime Stoppers last month and he hopes for at least four times that many. "It is a successful program. I would just like to be a bit busier," he said. "The calls have fallen off over the last couple of months." Last year, he said, 227 cases were solved with an arrest through the help of Crime Stopper calls. The cost to Crime Stoppers was $4,300. The average cost was $18.94. So far in 1993 with 74 calls, there have been 22 arrests and 32 charges. For two years from 1983, he was a detective constable working on child abuse and sexual assault cases. His police career began in Oakville where he served on the traffic advisory committee and as range officer and coach officer. A 20â€"yearâ€"old Oakville man is facing theft charges after women‘s wallets were stolen from two difâ€" ferent locations Monday afternoon. Just before 3 p.m., an employee of the Towne Restaurant on Speers Road had her purse stolen from a rear storage area. Approximately $1,300 and personal property was stolen. A suspicious male had been seen in the area. Shortly after 3 p.m., a female employee at the BiWay Store on the North Service Road saw a man in the store‘s back room rummagâ€" ing through lockers. The man fled and the employee discovered her wallet containing $65 was missing. Facing a charge of theft over $1,000 and a charge of theft under $1,000 is Leslie Elmer O‘Neal, 20, of Margaret Drive.
